Questions & Answers from the 53 Impact Meeting on Sunday:

Q:  What was 2012's summer vehicle count through Eveleth?

A:  16,835  The average daily count was 12,950 with 30% added for summer travel.

Q:  Why is the Westerly Route being considered?

A:  Federal regulations require at least three routes for comparison.

Q:  Why wait until 2014 to decide on a Hwy. 53 route?

A:  Hopefully, a decision will be reached before then.  2014 is a worst case scenario.

Q:  What is the lease status on the ore body south of Eveleth?

A:  MnDOT is working on resolving lease issues on the other highways.

MnDOT is offering to hold Highway 53 biweekly meetings on Hoover Road.

Please respond:  What is the best day and time to hold the meetings?

May 6, 2013

-The first two Highway 53 bi-weekly meetings are scheduled for Tuesday,
May 14 and 28, 10:00-11:00am, at MnDOT, Hoover Road, Virginia.
-Economic Impact Studies should begin the first part of June. Focus will be on:
Emergency services, utilities, business/retail, community and residential.
-A slide on traffic counts for the Eveleth/Virginia connection will soon be
available. May 14, 2013 MnDOT is expecting the draft of the Econmic Impact Study by September and finalized by October. May 15, 2013

What is the plan for a temporary re-route of Hwy 53 if the existing highway needs to be closed before a new route is ready?

- MnDOT is deploying many resources to meet the May 2017 deadline.  This includes key checkpoints and innovative construction practices.

- We are working closely with Cliffs (United Taconite) on the time schedule.

- The construction of any route will take 1 1/2 - 2 construction seasons.  If a construction contract cannot be started by spring 2015 and United Taconite cannot provide a time extension, then plans for a temporary route would be needed.

- The temporary route would follow Hwy 37 and CR 7.   Less than a year would be needed to make interim improvements on these routes.  Interim improvements could include traffic control signal systems at key locations along the route and alternative routes such as CR 101.  Pavement and signing upgrades would be other key components of an interim temporary route.

Here are some discussion points for your representatives:

  • The Westerly route would be devastating to our surrounding communities and businesses.
  • The Westerly route creates safety concerns including increased mileage and road size, to name a few.
  • The Westerly route would increase mileage and affect travel times for school buses, emergency vehicles and communities (30 minutes to an hour).

Minnesota Department of Transportation
395 John Ireland Blvd,
St. Paul, MN 55155-1899

Dear Commissioner Zelle:

I am writing to you in opposition to the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s proposed westerly route for Highway 53, which completely bypasses the Cities of Virginia, Eveleth and cuts off the entire East Range from the rest of the Iron Range.

We may be many cities but we are one community.  We ask you to find a route that:

  • does not halt or create a hardship for local commerce by bypassing entire communities,
  • does not split communities from one another,
  • allows for the continued sharing of utility and emergency services, and
  • provides a connective, safe, and efficient transportation system.

I respectfully request that you direct the Minnesota Department of Transportation to concentrate on proposed routes M-1 and E-2 and resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
