Blacksmithing: The Original Heavy Metal

See and Experience Traditional Scandinavian Blacksmithing!

Through a grant received by the MN State Arts Board, the MN Discovery Center was awarded the Folk and Traditional Arts grant to enable us to share Scandinavian blacksmithing with our visitors! The project includes Master Blacksmith, Doug Swenson of Hawley, MN to teach two local blacksmiths designs and techniques used traditionally by Scandinavian blacksmiths.

Throughout the summer, every Thursday and Saturday during certain hours, you can first hear, then see, our blacksmiths pounding away!

Doug Swenson presentation, “Dark Ages Ironworking” will cover the production of iron from bog iron ore to forging of the iron into everyday objects. The presentation will also attempt to describe the impact of iron tools and implements on the average person living during this period of time.
